Even though I was homeschooled, it was not easy withdrawing the boys from school. It was through much prayer and tears that the decision was made. The box curriculum had been purchased before my 5 year old had even begun public school. My husband left the decision up to me, knowing that the burden would mostly fall on my shoulders.
My husband's family does not speak with us. They do not support our decision to homeschool. This is not due to our not being capable of schooling the children. It is merely because of the social aspect. There is indeed more to schooling than just the 3 R's, but socialization is a benefit not the reason for children to attend school. In a way their distance has been a blessing. It is not pleasant when children (cousins) are compared to each other.
So, here we are all these years later. What a journey it has been. I personally have come a long way from my A Beka Kindergarten boxed curriculum. (You homeschoolers out there can relate.) Math U See was the first curriculum I chose away from the box. God bless Mr. Demme! He is a genius.
Since 2003 I've learned about the many methods of homeschooling. I was homeschooled, but I was schooled in the traditional methods and was taught using ACE and A Beka. Our homeschool is eclectic with a Charlotte Mason flair.
My boys are taught the 3 R's, but more importantly I am glad that they are taught our beliefs. I am glad that God has given me the responsibility of teaching my children in all areas.
My husband and I pray for direction in our boys' schooling, and that we will guide them in His Paths. Even when teaching math, I pray that the math is what He wants so that the children will be prepared for their future for Him. I do not know what God has in store for my boys as they become men. I only hope that I have paved the way for their future for Him.
